Damir Avdagics praksis behandler historisk minne og identitet gjennom tekst, performance og video. Konflikten i eks-Jugoslavia danner en sentral del av Avdagics familiehistorie og han bruker denne hendelsen som utgangspunkt for å ta opp temaer som skiftende politiske systemer, migrasjon og forholdet mellom generasjoner i sine verk. Avdagics arbeidsmateriale er ord – fortellinger som han samler gjennom samtaler med medlemmer av det eks-Jugoslaviske miljøet, og som fremføres av utøvere gjennom ulike performance-strategier, lesninger, oversettelser, reenactments osv. Arbeidene setter tidsepoker i dialog og reflekterer over hvordan historie strekker seg gjennom tid og på tvers av generasjoner.

I Skulpturtriennalen viser Damir Avdagic en ny video, filmet i mai 2021. I verket arbeider han med 5 deltakere som alle som barn kom til Norge som flyktninger på 90-tallet. Deltakerne i videoen fremfører en kronologi av vitnesbyrd fra perioden 1980-1995, som sporer utviklingen av konflikten i eks-Jugoslavia og som er fortalt av medlemmer av deres foreldre og besteforeldres generasjon. Under fremførelsen bryter deltakerne med sine roller, det skiftes mellom språk, gruppen ser humoristisk på historien de har til felles og betydningen av nasjonalitet og identitet blir diskutert innad i gruppen. Verket setter to generasjoner i dialog og spør hvilket ansvar de yngre generasjonene har ovenfor de eldre.

Damir Avdagic (f. 1987, Banja Luka, Bosnia-Hercegovina) bor og jobber i Oslo. Han har sin utdanning fra University of California, UCLA, (MFA, 2016) og fra Det Kongelige Danske Kunstakademi, (MFA, 2014). Avdagics siste separatutstillinger inkluderer 18th Street Art Center, Los Angeles (2020); Oppland Kunstsenter, Lillehammer (2020); RAM Galleri, Oslo (2019) og Galleri Entrée, Bergen (2018). Avdagic har deltatt på gruppeutstillinger ved Framer/Framed, Amsterdam (2020); Kunsthall Charlottenborg, København (2019); Kristiansand Kunsthall (2018) m.fl. Damir Avdagic er Fulbright stipendiat og mottaker av BKHs Fotokunstpris, 2015.

Damir Avdagic’s art focuses on historical memory and identity through text, performance and video. The conflict in the former Yugoslavia is central to part of his family history, and he uses this conflict as a springboard for addressing themes such as shifting political systems, migration and the relationship between generations. His main artistic material consists of words: stories he has collected through conversations with members of the ex-Yugoslavian community, which are presented to the public through performance strategies such as readings, translations, re-enactments and so forth. His works create a dialogue between different periods of time and reflect on how history stretches through time and cuts across generations.

For the Sculpture Triennial, Avdagic presents a new video filmed in May 2021. In it, he works with five people who came to Norway as child refugees in the 1990s. They present testimonies from the period 1980–95 that chronologically trace the development of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia and which stem from members of their parents’ and grandparents’ generation. During the presentation, the participants interrupt their roles and alternate between languages. They look with humour on the stories they share in common. They discuss between themselves the significance of nationality and identity. The work generates a dialogue between two generations and asks questions about what responsibility the younger generation has vis-à-vis the older generation. 

Damir Avdagic (b. 1987, Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina) lives and works in Oslo. He has MAs from the University of California, UCLA (2016) and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (2014). His recent solo exhibitions have been at (a selection) 18th Street Art Center, Los Angeles (2020), Oppland Kunstsenter, Lillehammer (2020), RAM Galleri, Oslo (2019) and Entre Galleri, Bergen (2018). He has participated in group shows at places such as Framer/Framed, Amsterdam (2020), Kunsthall Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (2019) and Kristiansand Kunsthall (2018), among others. Avdagic is a Fulbright Fellow and recipient of the Norwegian Visual Artists’ Renumeration Fund’s Photographic Art Prize (2015).
